A few hardy souls braved the bad weather last weekend to participate in the beach clean-up at Imperial Beach, organized by Surfrider. We were glad we went, though we had to end early. We look forward to the next one, and better weather!

The Food Packing and Sorting event, sponsored by the Chula Vista Welfare Council, was a great success!
Thank you to all the UUSB volunteers and to Maureen for organizing our participation in this community event.

Here are some details from her report:

" The food we packed was donated inside classrooms throughout the Chula Vista Elementary School District. Boxes were packed to give food to 330 families who have children in the CV Elementary School District who put in requests for food donations during the winter break from school. A box of food and a gift certificate to a local grocery store in the amount of $25 - $45 (depending on family size) will be given to each family. Extra food is also given to a local domestic violence shelter. Any extra boxes go to the Family Resource Centers located on several CV elementary school campuses to give to families who come in requesting assistance."

What was it like to be part of this activity? Let's read some comments from some of the volunteers!

Linda: "It was an amazing evening! It felt so good to do something so physical and that will help many families on such a basic level as to simply provide food. Then, upon reflecting this morning, I'm also saddened that there are so many families in need of something so necessary as food. I hope that we have brightened the hopes of some families."

Nan: "Thank you, Maureen, for making this opportunity available to our church members. I think we all enjoyed being there and we're happy to help make some other families lives easier. What an amazing organizational feat!

I just met with Jeanel King, the facilitator of our first gathering of the Charter for Compassion group in San Diego, which took place last Saturday at the Hillcrest campus.
She is truly amazing and I and am so thankful that she came through for me. We went over the evaluation forms and the pledge postcards and we are both very pleased of the feedback received from the event's participants and their commitment to act and keep the momentum going.
Maybe the second gathering will take place in the South Bay early next year... at our own facility? Wouldn't that be great?

The service project planning went very well. We will be presenting the two finalist projects for your consideration very soon.

This past Saturday many of you will shared a meal with the guests of the Interfaith Homeless Shelter. A big thank you to all of you who participated in this event.  It was a great time.

Today the world celebrated the unveiling of the Charter for Compassion. I invite you all to visit the official site, learn about it, affirm it, and be inspired to take action. The Peace and Democracy group will be hosting a related event at the Hillcrest campus Saturday afternoon. Please let others know about it. The site is www.CharterforCompassion.org
